I know there are guys out there with far more experience on Monitor
hardware than me but if this helps anyone I will be happy.

Several years ago I purchased a Dell 19" Flat Panel Ultra Sharp and
thought I was getting top of the line especially for the price I paid.
It turns out that the 19" is  PVA. Being that I bought the Ultra Sharp
I thought I was getting top of the line (S-IPS/H-ISP). I have a problem
with the advertising tactics of Dell and other mfg.s not specifying these
details for the consumer.
Here are some sites I found that explain the ins/and/outs of Monitors:

Anyones thoughts on the subject would be most welcome.

Not just monitors but computers in general.  I bought my wife a Dell a few years back and assumed all computers then had AGP adapters.  This one does not.  It didn't hurt her since it's only used for her business but I'll eventually inherit it and it would be nice to be able to plug in one.

AGP is old technology its days are almost over and it's only a matter of time until PCI-Express completely takes over and AGP is left for dead.

The benefit of PCI Express is that it can handle a greater data throughput than an AGP slot. PCI Express offers performance of up to 4 times faster than the fastest AGP slot.

Another advantage of PCI Express is you can connect more than one video card to your computer for extra performance. This is impossible with AGP since a motherboard can only have one AGP slot.

Jack,

My opinion Dell sucks! You want a great product buy a Gateway monitor or Gateway computer. Here's the monitor I use.

Yes, I know.  Like I said, a few years back, and it didn't have pci-e either.

Just bought a new toy that I'am planning to use as the hubby's development pc:

AMD Phenom 9850 Black edition Quad Core
4 GB of Kingston Hyper 1066 Mhz RAM
Seagate 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA running at 3 Gb/sec [getting more Hdd's next month for RAID]
Asus M/board AM+2 - with Hybrid SLi
20X LG Lightscripe DVD-Writer
Antec Chassis with Heat disipating technology

All for R6000 or about $790 US - any recommendation as to base OS, virtualization software etc?

Hi Draakie,
That looks like one heck of a Puter.
But I think you would probably get a faster answer by starting
a new thread. People might not look here for your particular
question.
I'm using the dog Vista only because most people do and usually
you have to follow what most people do.
Intended as a friendly suggestion.

Just in case someone could use the information, here are two
sites that contain quite good info on the inner workings of
monitors.

What's up with the url obfuscation ?    :eek

Somewhere I got the idea that web site addresses had
to be xxx and not www in messages.
Please pardon the confusion....

With a name like "Hardforum," one might think it IS an XXX site. :bdg

Not a problem, I don't frequent those establishments anyways. Funny story though, once I was helping a 15-year old kid from Newfoundland add an IRC client to his web server, and recommended a package called "freechat." Before I could give him the url, he had typed in freechat.com, and landed smack-dab in the middle a porn popup site. Whoops! :toothy

Anyways, back to monitors... recently I may have commented about the old Panasonic S70. That is a 19-inch CRT which came out around 1993 (actually it's the same type monitor Neo has on his desk in The Matrix.) It was very expensive new at that time, $533 IIRC. But the thing has been used for at least a few hours every day since then, and it is till going strong! I have seen more than a few monitors fade, blur, dim, even poof during that time... but the S70 is one helluva monitor. I'd recommend, if you ever see one, even used, grab it.

The hubby came home with a 22" Samsung LCD 2ms refresh in crystal black last night.
Needless to say it did'nt stay in it's box for very long. Bigger is better - and it is Big.  :toothy
Very reasonable pricing aswell approx. $ 270 US incl TAX or R 2 200. Vivid colour and additional DVI
connector to boot.
