Bad vibes

I am trying to find out the source of some vibration from my computer.

It usually eventually goes away but not b4 my blood pressure has spiked. :-)

It's not coming from the hard drives.

fan
a while back, i replaced the fan on this machine
the chassis fan is a little different from many of them - different connector - for sony
i looked around on e-bay and amazon
i found a place that had them for ~ $6, ~ $4.50 in qty of 10
so, i bought 10 of them - what the heck - i have 2 machines the same

most fans, today, have nylon bearings - or plastic, maybe ?
some actually have metal ones - lol

Hey Super Dave,

I found a piece of plastic behind the motherboard, but no sound reduction.

When I pressed against the motherboard the sound changed.

I will see if there is some rubber washers I can used to dampen the vibration.

well - try to find what is causing it, too
maybe you just have a bunch of loose screws   :P
it may be the chassis fan - or p/s fan
or even the CD/DVD - under certain conditions, they run when they should be idle

but - you can disconnect things to eliminate them as the cause
even the chassis fan - you may get a "fan too slow" warning - but that's ok
a little harder to disconnect the p/s fan

I have had problems with cheap cases where a poorly designed panel was amplifying the sound and the amplitude of the vibration by impacting a nearby panel or other structural member as it vibrated. My solution was to bend the offending panel (as in overstress it, so it does not spring back to its original shape) so that when it was screwed in place it remained in firm contact with the nearby panel or structural member.

My new machine had a low buzz sound to it. What is was is the slide off side cover. I removed it and as Michael suggested I laid it over my upper leg and carefully gave it a slight bend so that when I slid it back into place and replaced the rear case screws it no longer buzzed.

I believe that I changed out the CPU cooling fan with one out of my "salvage" box.

I think that the new fan is faster, thus more vibration being transmitted to the motherboard etc.

When I have time, I will see what fan is supposed to be there and see if I have an equivalent.

With my employment status, I will live with it.
