I am not sure about this prediction.

Can streaming movies be saved ?

If your computer is down and you want to watch a flick , are you are S.O.L. ?

I'll stick with the reliable physical DVD.

What are your thoughts ?

"The DVD player should be replaced by digital delivery," says Ian Olgeirson, a senior analyst at SNL Kagan, who points to streaming movie services like Netflix as being the future. "Blu-rays and whatever the next generation high-end movie format emerges could prolong the lifespan because of challenges around streaming, but eventually the disc is going to be phased out."

The idea of placing a disc into a DVD player to watch a movie will eventually seem as outdated as placing a record on a turntable, which brings us to the next product on our list...

i can see where the movie industry might like something along that line
they would try to use it to prevent pirating movies
instead of selling a DVD, they sell a movie on a pay-per-view basis

now, i don't know how well the market (i.e. the consumers) will accept the idea
if consumers don't play along, they may be stuck selling DVD's   :P

movies are a little like beer - they always taste better when they are free   :bdg

i suppose i should clarify that a bit - lol

of course, i would never think of pirating a movie   :red
but, there is a lot of internet traffic that is dedicated to doing so
it used to be something like 70% of all internet traffic was porno - lol
well, with pirating activity, the porno-percentage drops a little bit
if we get rid of pirating, we go back to porno   :lol

of course, i would never think of looking at a nakie woman online   :8)

Pron has it's place, but like every else it can be abused.
Proper control (if possible) would be required.

With each new technology come the technology thieves.
If you cannot crack the internals itself, somebody adds an external plugin.
It's as I said, the universe is balanced, for if it were not we'd have some institution abusing our rights - which happens all the time.
I must admit, it's quiet a challenge to make a piece of tamperproof 'techno-junko'.

Hmmm!! ... which side of the bed did I get out of this morning.. :bdg

You are right.

Many consumers won't go along without a physical copy of the movie.

So, the movie companies will have to continue producing some form of the movie.

One thing for sure, marketeers have exactly the same chance of predicting the future as anyone. Where are the flyings cars that we where supossed to have by 2,000?

In the long run is the consumer and cost that decides which technologies will remain. Beta was superior but VHS was cheaper. BlueRay exist, but DVD are still sold. Tablets are made, but laptops and desktop are still kings.

My point is that predicting the future is a fantasy. You will only know what the future holds when it comes. The best you can do is to create a cult, so people from your cult will buy your products irrelevant if the competition have a better one. Apple is (was?) specially good at this.

I am sure that banks would love a cashless society.

Twister

I would rather physically own the DVD than have a piece of technology telling me it's there.

yah - and if the internet is down, you are screwed   :'(

The whole Cloud thing dosen't have any appeal for me. As I understand this concept, you don't even own an OS,the system and ALL the apps are in the "Cloud". Access to the cloud would have a fee for use. AND any output you create is on the cloud forever somewhat like texting on the WEB stays forever somewhere on the WEB in a saved state.

Astro

"Cloud"? What is that? Oh I see........ you mean the internet.  ::)  (Sorry - I have a particular loathing for "the cloud" and anything related to it).

I'm a bit hypocritical as I have a few movies from iTunes, but I can still burn them to a disc, so I guess that counts.

Streaming won't work for one reason: the internet of the UK is too crap for it to work. Even rubbish quality YouTube videos fail to stream properly some days - forget trying to stream DVD quality movies. Until the internet is many times faster at its slowest times than it is today, it won't work. Meanwhile something else will come out, or the internet as we know it will cease to exist.

Actually the cash you got in your pocket and in the bank is an "I owe you nothing".

Before credit was use as base of currency value (aka, what ever the bank cartel thinks that money is worth), the notes where basically the promise for real money (aka, gold and silver).
