Working on a file extension editor and am just curious to know how many files extensions you have in your registry (I'm sure you do to  :bg ) ok Part 2
It will show 2 message boxes with your total file extensions.  1st one is the total extension for the current user and the second one is the extensions for the machine..

Regular user (That I really don't use)r:

i have 457
i am sure it would be more if i had ms office installed - lol
how many do you have ?

Gunner

I just did a format and install and haven't installed much yet (not gonna install MS Office this time around, using Open Office) at the moment have 519 extensions, when I install WinRAR it will register another 25 or so!  At one point I had well over 1000 extensions in the registry many programs don't remove everything from the registry when they get uninstalled.... hmmmmm  maybe I will add that as a feature to clean up unused extensions....

i don't know how you'd know they were unused
many extensions get a default definition from windows - which would vary from OS to OS, i guess
i suppose you could chase down the app and see if the associated SID was still there, as well as the program to go with it
probably what many registry cleaners do

Hi Gunner,

Thanks for the tool. I have 558 extensions.

akane

I have 781, and not all are "clickable".
Please note - some file extensions are there just for the icon - to have a cool icon for .res, .map, .obj file, instead the default icon.

sysfce2

739 for me, and I do have office.

Recently reinstalled XP on the laptop I'm on now (new HD), haven't installed Office yet and I have 482.

actually, if the extension does not have a program associated with it (any file with an icon in it i.e. .cpl, .exe, .dll, .drv etc) then it will get a default windows icon and can be deleted from the registry afaik.
