By the look of the hilt it would appear to be a bastard sword, they were heavily used by the British in the late 13th century, the blade is too narrow for a broad sword.

Do you practice fighting with that sword, kromag?

I once had the chance to join some training sessions for longsword fighting in the german style of Liechtenauer from 14th century. That is a complete combat system including fighting with different weapons, kick and punch techniques and wrestling, not a bit less complex than any asian martial art.

I have taken arts in the past which none allowed the use of swords and such; albeit, I have done some training on my own in the past for a few years with swords, and with nunchaku.

I usually prefer to take a blind leap at such things so I am not constrained nor tainted by outside influence and enjoy figuring things out :bg

The Germans did make a nice longsword, they are essentially the same as a bastard sword but are "hand and a half" with a slightly shorter hilt because of it, I still think the pinnacle of European sword design was the German Rapier, light, one handed and deadly on the thrust but at the same time a beautiful piece of art, even the small sword which came later and is the dress sword of the US Marines doesn't hold a candle to it.

Anunitu,

Nice picture, its proof of seniority. I have never been so lucky as to go evenly gray, my beard is a mix and the top has a few gray ones but not enough to change the average colour.
