Reason for dumping Windows 98 2nd Ed

I have Spyware Detector by Max Secure on Wiffies puter.
I paid $30 for the stupid thing and they now tell me that
they no longer support the "Live Update" function for Wiindows
98 2nd ed.
Guess I'm going to need another Spyware Program.
Suggestions  welcome

well 98se is kinda dead, even microsoft dont support it anymore, you're probably better off upgrading to 2k or something, if your pc can handle it...

Try to search the net to get a copy of Ad-Aware 2006. It should work on Windows 98 SE.

I just joined and I'm supposed to post in order to prove I'm not a bot.   Try buying a new printer with support for win98.  None of the network ready ones run on 98.

Hi Joe,

Welcome on board. Win98 is long gone so unless you buy a printer that is backwards compatible, runs of a printer port or runs off a network hub, its doubtful that it will have driver support for win98.

I found a real good use for an old computer (98 2nd addition with printer)  that is working but to old to be of any value.
Took all internet stuff of of it.
Not connected to the internet.
Put all my financial and anything personal on it.
This completely isolates me from all the internet nonsense.

....OR you could have just dumped OpenSuse 10.x on it, firewalled yourself and used the built-in
browsers without spyware & virus headaches. Ran a samba server for any noteworthy goodies
you wanted to transfer over your local LAN. All and all - the entire setup would have taken
about 60 minutes - the new intuitive GUI setup is a real breeze. Click and it works. :thumbu
It should run fine on any older machines - just need enough RAM - at least 512MB - preferably 1GB.
Rather issolating your development machine from the  internet? :bg
Just a thought - use it don't use it.

I have actually done it with an instalation of Ubuntu and it worked fine but it was a pain to have to get up and go to another computer all the time so the linux box is in storage at the moment.

If you want a sandbox for a badly secured lousy browser (Internet Exploder) run a Microsoft VM with you favourite windows version on it and make sure you back up the main VM file so if it wipes out the VM from one of its many security holes, you just shut it down, restore the entire VM and off you go again until the next wipeout.  :bg

I had a look at Ubuntu and it was a bit of jellyfish IMHO. Yes, it says it's the next greatest thing
but it does'nt live up to expectation. Since Novell got involved with Suse - it's grown leaps and
bounds. It's highly stable - the GUI is Excellent in the extreme - Enterprise editions are absolutely
awesome (insanely easy to setup) - blows MS Server 2003 out of the water.
EXAMPLE:
-------------
* clicks = mouse clicks within GUI
Mail Server POP3/SMTP - (plus minus) 10 clicks and fill in the user account details - NOW USE
Samba Server - (plus minus) 5 clicks and fill in the user account details - NOW USE
PXE application/OS install  boot Server - 3 files copy paste / 1 directory create. One batch script modification (text based) + 10 clicks.
                                                     - ISO image copy paste into created directory - NOW USE

OR if you wish - download prefabricated secured scripts from the net - modify for your workgroup/domain & network settings
Copy/paste - Your'e Done.
