    Windows Vista Ultimate
    Windows Vista Home Basic

I find the descriptions vague.
How is a programmer to know which one to get?????
Maybe the price will determine what I can get.

Yep, the price should narrow down the list of choices. According to the rumors ultimate edition will cost somewhere around 3 hundred, starter edition - three times less.
I personally probably will go for the most basic and less bundled edition since I never use any Microsoft products anyway (besides the OS, doh!) and paying for a mediaplayer, IIS, the defender suite they want to stick in, or what's not seems unreasonable.

What worries me the most however, is the Vista`s distribution media. Is there any chance it will be released on a CD? or should I start saving for a dvd drive.

Heh, start saving for a DVD drive, the basic models are cheap. But if you plan on running Vista, then you better start saving for a new machine as well, Vista is not a light OS :)

Anything but light... i installed it on VMWare, and it's eating about 600 MB of ram, without any other apps running ::)

Sheesh! What were we recently saying about bloatware coding and real-estate being so cheap?? Seems to me 600 million bytes just to run the OS is a hugely inefficient usage of ram...
