Thanks Bogdan, I assumed it was not  a steady-state machine. That greatly simplifies things! :bg

I checked APlib against RAR and well, RAR is both faster and produces smaller results. Too bad it is not open-source! I wonder if JCALG1 is faster/smaller than APlib?

JCALG1 is about 100x slower to compress than APlib and produces exactly the same compression ratio...
