Paging file size on 2 hard drives

I have 2 hard drives on my home computer.

I am trying to figure out a good mix for the paging file size for my primary and secondary drive.

My primary drive is 40 Gb and my secondary is 120 Gb if that is a factor to consider.

Thanks,

Notes - "If your PC has more then one physical hard drives you can enhance performance by putting the paging file on a different partition and on a different physical hard disk drive. That way, Windows can handle multiple I/O requests more quickly. When the paging file is on the boot partition, Windows must perform disk reading and writing requests on both the system folder and the paging file. When the paging file is moved to a different partition and a different physical hard disk drive, there is less competition between reading and writing requests. However, if you remove the paging file from the boot partition, Windows cannot create a dump file (Memory.dmp) in which to write debugging information in the event that a kernel mode Stop Error message occurs. This could lead to extended downtime if you must debug to troubleshoot the Stop error message. The optimal solution is to create one paging file that is stored on the boot partition, and then create one paging file on another partition that is less frequently accessed on a different physical hard disk if a different physical hard disk is available. Additionally, it is optimal to create the second paging file so that it exists on its own partition, with no data or operating-system-specific files. By design, Windows uses the paging file on the less frequently accessed partition over the paging file on the more heavily accessed boot partition. An internal algorithm is used to determine which paging file to use for virtual memory management."

One thing to remember with IDE drives is to have them on their own controller, not on the same one as master/slave.
SATA drives don't have that sort of restriction though.

Andy,

Put you swap file on the fastest part of the bigger drive as it will probably be faster than the old 40 gig one. Only run one swap file.

you can set the size, although it isn't easy to find - lol...

Control Panel
System Properties
Advanced tab
Performance - Settings button
Advanced tab
Virtual Memory - Change button

i usually select Custom Size - and set the Maximum to something over 3000 pages
click the Set button - i think you have to re-boot for it to take affect
if the value was set low, there will be a noticable difference

I added a 2nd 11 Gb hard drive and I put the swapfile there.

Andy, Alzheimer's a terrible thing. My brother's father in-law was a health-nut and rarely ate meat and grew his own vegetables every year. He avoided all the good junk food I like to eat, like meat, meat and more meat. At age 65 they had to put him in a home for folks with this type of ailment. He just passed away this past January at the age of 85. That's 20 years of not knowing who he was or knowing who any of his 4 adult kids were. It's an awful thing, not for the person who has the affliction but sadness and sorrow for those that knew the man who had no clue who any of us were, including himself.

I would point out that his 4 kids, one who is now 60 has so far shown now sign of the disease.

There has been some unusual research on this topic lately, improve the lighting just being one of them for people who are elderly, keep up the stimuli and they seem to keep their marbles longer.
