OK, here goes. "YOU ARE NUMBER 6!" "No!, I am not a number!" "I am a person!!!"

Hi KeepingRealBusy,

Welcome to the Masm Forum.

We had better see a more coherant answer than this shortly or the membership will be removed.

You are obviously not a fan of "The Prisoner".

My main objective is to see if MASM32 would be useful in assembling the GNU BigNum library, or if there is any MASM32 equivalent library, or if I have to modify my own integer version to become a floating point version. I want to do this with MASM/VS not GAS/GCC.

I question the use of MASM 8.0. I have already found and reported two errors, and wasn't even systematically looking for errors, just using MASM 8.0 (also found a third error but that was JUST a packaging error - ML.EXE was not included in the ORCAS Beta 2 standard version - would be fixed for final release). The second error exists in MASM 9.0 itself and reportibly will be fixed (SP1?).

Dave.

Fortunately I have not watched television for about 20 years so "Prisoner" is well past my recollection. Glad to see you are a human being, we have problems with spam bots and automated joins so I guess you undersand why we are a bit fast on the uptake.

I question the use of MASM 8.0
Use Jwasm, then. In the Open Watcom assembler subforum.

@ hutch
Please consider renaming that section to something better.

Vortex,

Before I reply with the details of the errors I encountered, I want to try the same test case using the other ASMs available here to see if the newly coded assemblers also have the same problem. The new assemblers may, in fact correct this problem. Right now, I am just reading as much as I can and putting in my two cents worth (that's just about what it's worth) whenever some one asks for improvement comments and I see so immediate improvement. I won't comment on anyone's coding style, I know that everyone will hate my style, but that's life.

Dave.

Hi KeepingRealBusy,

As BlackVortex mentioned, you can try Jwasm, a Masm compatible assembler maintained by Japheth. Poasm is another assembler for you to try. ( The Poasm macro engine has some differences compared to Masm. )

I asked about the errors you reported as it might be useful to know them while coding.

We have here many members adopting different styles of coding. No any problem.

KeepingRealBusy

As mentioned earlier, I believe the errors to be implementation caused, and the new implementations will probably not have those errors. It remains to be seen whether there will be any different errors. At least the source is available for JWASM. I can always check whenever anything goes wrong. I was a developer on a mainframe system, and had access to the entire system source. When things went wrong (usually in the middle of the night), I could aways check the source of the responsible module to see who was in error, me or the system. Now that I'm retired, I miss that opportunity. Having the source for the assembler will be a step in the right direction.

Dave.

I'm not sure about this, but Hutch might be able to change your nickname if you ask nicely. :bg

No but we may slip an OS timeslice into your code so it ran like slow motion.
