Actually, I'd think BitTorrent is quite a robust way of achieving something like this.

torrents are nice - but it takes some doing to get the tracker set up

I don't know, I haven't played with it much but it is a block orientated system with hashes, and Self-healing.

I've used it to move files between systems on a local network. Pretty much a matter of slapping in the IP address of the local Peer.

That said you can't beat the bandwidth of a box of tapes/disks on the highway.

It's really puzzled me why Microsoft can't enable some kind of Torrent scheme for all the stupid updates my systems keep pulling individually, and managing it within a local network infrastructure.

In work environments, a tool like eseutil.exe is preferable as it's simple to use and has the minimum dependencies. You can easily backup files with this tool to a remote server located in another district. ( I have such a server in the company where I work. )
