It is still very useful for watermarking the executable in a transparent way...

It's the trend for distributive software to be watermarked with the user's ID information. 

Serialization control via web access is still high on the acceptance of viable copy control.  But you need a full time server to offer the service.

The problem I see typically is, copy protection does interfere with program operation.  At times, for the right reason, and at times, for the wrong reasons.
