Have you ever heard of this festival?
In Russia this holidays is celebrated every year. All Russia come to Mastriuki Lakes to celebrate the festival in after Valeri Grushin, who died 33 years ago on those lakes while saving 2 young children who was sinking. Valeri saved them in cost of his life. Since that time this festival is dedicated to the brave man who fought for life of children, won but died himself.

Valeri was a unprofessional musician, he played the guitar songs, that wrote himself.
That's why the festival is full of songs played on the guitar by different people all over the Russia in one place - near by those lakes. And people not only from the Russia but also from Germany, Israel, USA come here to play their own songs on a guitar.
Authors as well as performers can try to sing their masterpieces on a large public. There the fame starts...

Igor,

He sounds like an interesting guy. Its good to see people like him remembered for having done something good rather than for many other reasons like wars and greed etc ...

There is an obelisk on the eastern side of Sydney City that I walk past if I go into the main city and it has the caption "George Thornton Mayor 1857" somewhere near its base and this always makes me laugh, Who the PHUK was George Thornton apart from being some obscure polititian 150 years ago who wanted to be immortalised in stone ?

At least Valeri Grushin is remembered by people for the things he did and perhaps this is the way it should be.

People immortalise themselves in their doings, Steve, that's the holy truth and the only way to be remembered by others. The first way is to do the bad things and the other - the good ones. Both types are in history, but only good ones are remembered with the best and kindest words and wishes.
So people, let's make a great in their kindness doings...

All is vanity and …violence…

Why violence?
Because the human life is NOT the 1st in the list of the human values
Words as a god, homeland, feat,” they died for us”, etc…are before the human life in it
and they always bring violence
But it is other story...

Someone with enough money and ego to have a statue built of himself?

A very long time ago my girlfriend dragged me through an exhibition from the Hermitage in Russia and while the drawcard was a Rembrandt that I just did not like, there was some truly stuning stuff from Italy from before the counter reformation but one that did stick to me was a full length portrait of this pompous little sh*t in a bright red tunic of some sort that the artist has captured in his full mediocrity.

The great humour of this portrait which the artist well understood in the way he painted it was that the guy who he painted would have truly loved it while the rest of the world for hundreds of years later would see him as the pompous little sh*t that he was.

I am lucky in OZ that we don't have a history of immortalising "bastards" and our war heros are people like ambulance drivers, medics and in some cases doctors who were involved in active service. Very few polititians have ever been liked and the major rememberance day celebrates a decisive victory for the Turkish army in WW1. Its also why we generally get on well with Turkish people as they were a very honourable enemy an under Attaturk treated our guys who were buried there with respect.
