I have made the old forum site available again for members only who were registered in that forum. It will not accept any new members or any new postings or attachments. I have disabled the mass email capacity so it cannot be used by any hack attempts.
To use the old forum as reference, you will need to make a link in your browser as it still retains the original addresses which will return you back to the new forum.
http://www.masmforum.com/oldsite.php
If someone finds a way to hack the remains of the old forum, I will simply delete all of it including the database.
Please let me know if it works OK under this restricted format for reference purposes. You should be able to read normal topics and download attached files.
Thanks Hutch, there was some stuff there that I needed access to after my recent hard disk failure. It seems to work OK.
Only the members of registed at 16 Dec 2004 before can go there, after days can't.
:'(
regards
Can't help you with that one, its a security leak to allow anyone to join the forum.
Mr. Hutch--:
Thanks your response.
Although I'm a member of old forum before the hacker attacked, but now, i can't access old forum.
permitting "read" and prohibitting "write" , i think it is not harmful toward old forum.
after long time, we expect you allow everyone to read old forum.
regards
I have only opened the old forum for reference to members weho were current at the time it was hacked. This means the date of the backup I used to restore it which was about a half a day behind the forum. The purpose was to allow members to retreive code and material they had posted on the old forum but among the thing that had to be disabled was new membership as it is one of the ways to hack the forum among many others. It is no longer a forum and only serves as an archive for members who belonged to it.
I would prefer to completely remove it but I will leave it up for a while if it does not get hacked for the convenience of members. If it gets hacked, it will be converted to free disk space. :P
as the old adage said:
one day someone is bited by a snake, he will consider that a ligature is a snake in ten years.
Thanks hutch,
The old forum contains a wealth of assembler information and useful reference material. Glad you have been able to make it available but sorry some people will be unable to access it.
best regards,
czDrillard
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
There was such a wealth of knowledge, both posted and linked, that I feared that my research into the lower-depths would be hampered. I had come to rely on that site as my gateway to a refined source of information, where the gurus had eliminated the bulk of the hits that would be otherwise returned by google.
This allows me access to that which has already been a big help.
Can you say, "Happy Martian"? I knew you could. :bg
Hi Hutch,
It would be a pitty to loose all the valuable material of the old forum.

Yeah, that's right!
Could the forums on the old site all be locked (no posting, just reading) to make it available to all? No need to log in (therefore register) to view posts?
Anyhow, glad it is there. Thanks.
No offense, Hutch, but why couldn't you keep everyone who was registered. I had to re-register to login.
The SQL databases are very different formats and there was no direct way to convert them. Manually it would have been a mountain of work. The old PHPBB2 forum had security holes all over the place that the latest version and patches did not plug up so it was the choice of leaving it closed or restricting its access and not allowing new members.
Hi hutch,
Hey thats great!
Thomas Antony
six_11,
I suppose you are a chinese since that is a chinese proverb.
Regards,
Victor
Thanks Victor,
Now I get it. Described in English with a phony Chinese accent, "Ancient chinese proverb shrouded in the mist of time". :P
hi Roticv:
it seems you are familiar with china. here, we are no nationality. importance is that all of in the masm forum is only one nationality named masm member.
I read a lot of your posts. I already have admired you long times. Giving me much guidance always has be welcomed.
talking stop here.
if we talk more, Hutch will think we are putting the scrap into the forum.
regards

Glad to hear it, thanks hutch-- :U There is a lot of knowledge.
What about creating a generic account for new members? Something like name: "masmforum", password: "masmforum"?
I think that is a very good idea :bg
Yeah,
This is fine but the phpbb2 software leaks like a seive and I am less than interested in another 3 to 4 days work to fix everything again. I removed files and disabled the rest so it would be a lot harder to hack it again and I don't intend to make it vulnerable again. The alternative was to leave it closed but I wanted to make it available for reference for people who were members and who had posted in it.
There is a trick or two in the works but the data can only be a knowledge base again, not a forum.
:U :U :U
yeah!
That's the characteristic of the masm administrator.
as a poetry depicted:
It is impossible that the pine tree is shaked by an ant.
Connect the idea that it took a lot of work to get this forum up after the last one had been hacked. It also took enough work to back up a 65 meg database with severely restricted access for security reasons to get the old forum browsable again for its members. Then there was the security testing to make sure both were something like secure so they could be used without being hacked again.
Also understand that policy is not subject to modification by repeatedly posting against it. It is in place for a reason which has been explained to all members and it will not be changed. Now if I hear any more about it I will delete the posts and lock the topic. It was posted for the convenience of members of the old forum, not as a running debate to change policy so the forum can be hacked again.
Also note the rules for the Campus where debate is not allowed in here.
Hutch,
I think you have been more than accommodating as usual. That is one of the reasons I like this forum, it is because of you and your desire to be so helpful. Kudos to you, Hutch, for a job well done!
Paul
I can't access the web.
in my webbrowser appear the folowing message:
Error 404
Sorry, the requested file cannot be found on this server.
so, how?
if you read the first few posts in this thread,
only available to original members (i.e. the really old guys)
but - you can d/l the attachment files
i find most of the attachments are kind of hard to use without the text that goes with them :P
however, some of them are really nice
