I just received my copy of Visual Studio 2005. Does anyone know if it will install on Windows 98? When I place the CDs in my CD drive nothing happens and it appears that it locks up (only on the drive itself). I have to manually open the drive tray to get out of the lock. My CD drive is good because it can read all other CDs that I have.
Robert,
If it's the Express Beta 2, here are the requirements.

Thanks Greg. That explains it all. :'(
So, what was the problem?

Greg,
GREAT LOGO ! It took me nearly a nanosecond to recognise it. :U

Vortex,
The problem is exactly as I posted it (ie.
Does anyone know if it will install on Windows 98?). The answer is in the link posted by Greg (
no, Visual Studio 2005 will not install on Windows 98). This is probably why it simply does nothing when I place the CD in my CD reader. But it doesn't really matter about the CD not doing anything since it won't install anyway then I will just kiss it good-bye.
Hi Robert,
Sorry, I didn't made clear my statement, I was curious to learn the reason why the CD driver did not function. Thanks for you reply.
Well, the CD driver works for all of the CDs I have except the VS 2005 ones. I'm not sure what the technical reason is that when I place the CDs in the reader nothing happens (one might of expected at least a message saying that VS 2005 does not support Windoes 98). When I went to that link I read where VS 2005 can only be installed on 2000 and up. So, I just simply concluded that is what caused the problem.
Robert,
Your problem is with the CDs not your machine. I have XP and it was a difficult install on XP. The set has several CDs and truly, I only used one of them, the one that installs the Studio, so I don't know if the problem is in all of them but I know for a fact that this particular CD is very poorly created. Probably as a result of a batch burn, they all have the same problem. Here is my experience...
When I put the CD in the drive, I had to open and close the door several times before it was recognized. Once the install begins, it copies a set of files to your local drive and then expands and installs them. Next, it must go back and get more files but now the CD is not found again. When I get the error, I just figured out all I had to do is open and close the door again. The drive will then be found again when it spins up and installation will continue. I had to repeat this process 5 times!!! I guess I am just determined.
Any way, they should be told their CDs are crap. They will probably say, hey its beta and its free!
I was installing on an AMD 1000+ with 256meg memory and a 20gig HD with 13 gig free. BTW: the installation is HUGE!
