this is not a new idea
Lovelock and Margulis proposed such a theory back in the 70's

they named mother earth "Gaia", after the Greek goddess

It will be depend on what is the definition of living things. It could be plant is a living thing too, but we are enjoying anything we got, and feel proud of it.
