Title: Wiffies 7 year old computer
Post by: shankle on November 25, 2011, 04:33:33 PM
Yes OE 6.0. I gave up trying to change her.... :bg
Haven't done a reinstall of Windows XP PRO for several years.
Reason the order of the DLLs that have to be installed on a Dell computer.
No longer can get help for her computer from Dell.

What is happening is input data is not accepted. Present solution is to shut down
and boot up. This might indicate the puter starting to fail or the OS has become corrupted
or both.
Surely Dave has been done this road. An ardent devotee of Windows XP. :bg
Not quite sure how to approach the problem.

I have a dell, 4 years old, and there is a complete copy of the oringinal OS installed by the factory on the d: partition. I just reboot the computer and press the F5 key and a series of prompts come up. One of them is to restore the OS to factory. I used it a few times and it works flawlessly, of course then you have hours online to update the OS.

Hi Don57,
Thanks for responding.
There is no partition D on Wiffies puter.
She is running a Dell GX280.
Only way to reinstall Windows XP Pro is by using the re-installation cd.
And then hope to get the Dlls installed in the correct order.

I forgot now exactly the commandline that you enter to re-install XP without loose the programs/configuration installed, but the keyword is ":\i386\winnt32 /unattend". You can reinstall it while windows is on, or via command prompt in boot(install) progress.
Download "autoruns" from sysinternals and disable/check some programs to try to identify the error. Maybe some program/driver that is being initialized can be the cause of these error.
