my eyes are going bad
for years, i have run on a 19" monitor at 1280x1024
today, i decided to back it off to 1024x768 so i can see
sigh - now i hafta adjuast everything
it's not like a can throw in the towel and say "life's over", either
i have to live up to what Zara has done, which isn't easy
on the bright side ( :P ), you guys won't have to put up with me too much longer :bdg
Well you could upgrade to a 28" at 1920x1200, $250, down-rating an LCD is surely going to get you a bunch of fuzzy interpolated pixels, wouldn't you rather get something sharper?
Or try glasses, like me :bg
Firefox has a nice feature called Zoom text only...
Dave,
Just get some reading glasses, I did the same years ago but when my arms were not long enough to read the newspaper, I stopped kidding myself and bought some reading glasses.
I currently use a 24 inch LCD screen with standard sized fonts at 1920 x 1080 and it is super clear and I am still using the standard sized fonts, this can be tweaked upwards if needed.
glasses - got that - lol
i will probably go get a new perscription
you guys are right, though - reducing the resolution is not the answer
everything just got bigger... and fuzzier :lol
i went back to 1280x1024 and adjusted all the display appearance settings - that's a little better
tomorrow, i will make some little "stilts" for my keyboard to sit on
then, i can move the monitor closer to me
thing is, it seems to be a light issue
my uncle went blind with glaucoma - i may have to be tested for that
Try adjusting the DPI setting.. (bigger text, same resolution, no fuzz)
Display Properties: Settings -> Advanced; DPI Setting: Large Size (120 DPI)
Also ensure good lighting, etc.
And you should have an eye pressure test - it's simple enough, and can be controlled with pills (or cannabis :wink) if necessary.
thanks, Tedd :U
not sure i want to go with the pot, though - lol
my uncle was blind, and my aunt had alzheimer's
the one got lost, and the other couldn't see to find her
it will be like that with Z and i if i go with the pot
she has meds that make her "oozy" - all i need is to be stoned
A decrease in accommodation with age is normal. People who are myopic retain the ability to focus close up, but people who start out with normal vision, as is my case, don't. I run 1280x1024 on a 21-inch CRT, and to put it in focus without reading glasses I have to approximately double my normal ~24 inch viewing distance.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accommodation_%28eye%29
until recently, i could see quite well up close if i took my glasses off
my problem is, i have built everything in my life around electronics
with bad eyesight, i will be pretty much useless :P
schematics, meters, scopes - all of it
not to mention the components keep getting smaller
would you believe they actually still put numbers on some of them ? :eek
i dug up a font i had installed on a previous build - that helps a little, too
a nice programming font...

I've also reluctantly agreed with the mirror that I'm going blind at short range... Long range is perfect - I can see my wife's knockers at 500m, no problem :U
I used to get prescription glasses with cost ~ZAR2000 each time. The problem is that when I took them off I was blind at any range.
Then somebody told me about cheapy 1.5x focals going for ZAR100... got these and all problems went away (including financial :toothy)
..and my 500m range came back into focus... once again I was a happy chappy :8)
:bg
Van,
I did the same thing, my prescription used to cost a couple of hundred buck a hit then I discovered $2.00 chinese glasses that work fine so I have them at different strengths all over the house and if I lose a pair I just pick out another pair I have floating around.
Ah, so some of you are joining the decrepit old age group.
Welcome , I need company :bg
good to know i am with friends, even if i can't see them :bg
Just get a decent flat screen, it will look like a new world for you.
Ah, still damaging my eyes here with a 1280x1024 res on 17" minimum text size :lol.... I have it all to look forward to....
you're a masochist, Peter :8)
Tedd's suggestion of changing the DPI to 120 works pretty well
it will take some getting used to, of course :P
This is the reason I bought a 32 inch flat screen TV that also works as a monitor..Interesting that a flat screen tv is cheaper than a dedicated monitor of the same size. It works great as a TV,and just as great as a monitor.
oh - good idea
i have a 42" flat-screen TV that has a VGA input
that could be on my desk in a heart-beat
all will be cool until the wife wants to snuggle on the sofa and watch a movie - it will be all snuggle and no movie (http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/24.gif)

Kind of doing the same thing here with some of the systems. One point of note though, most TV applications do not provide for any pitch/height/tilt control (ie rigidly mounted, unlike most monitor applications), so unless you are mounting it on a swivel bracket, consider how it's going to sit on your desk and how you sit with respect to it. At least at the Tiger showroom you can get your hands on the product and see if it moves the way you want, and has the connectors/escape you need
At 28-32" consider also how far you need to be away for it so as not to get annoyed by peripheral vision issues, especially 50-60 Hz flicker in my case. Consider also 16:10 displays giving 1200 vs 1080 lines of resolution.

Want big pixels, seen some 55" 1080p screens at $500-$800 <G>
Look honey we can get Netflix on it..
today you even can run two monitors instead of just one, a standing 22inch is great for forums for example, for 3dmodelling, its great to have more space
<G> I used to have a lot of 21" CRT and those things were fricken huge and heavy.
Bracket mounting a couple of LCD panels on the back of the desk is a lot easier, and you still have desk space.
There's always the Swordfish set up, complete with Red Bull

As a geek I briefly considered this when I saw the movie but quickly realised I could only look in one place at any given time and the rest of it and more was already in my head or available with a mouse roll :lol
Maybe something like M$ surface would make more sense (if yer loaded)
http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en/us/default.aspx
Of course assuming you are 99% blind there is always WHUXGA

Only time I ever used two monitors was while debugging..Had a VGA card and a Mono(Hercules) card for the debugger output. That was back in the DOS days, and you also had to have a debugger that allowed output to another monitor. Was good for debugging because you could run your application, and see the debugger screen at the same time. Good for graphic apps as you could see at what point the problem was.
Dave,
Since you say you already have glasses, you can either carry around 2 pair of glasses or get bifocals. I ran in to the same problem a couple of years ago. Like Hutch said, a cheap pair of reading glasses from the drugstore will do the job for your close-up vision and your existing glasses are probably good for distance vision. You should go see the eye doc though, maybe try out a pair of bifocals.

> <G> I used to have a lot of 21" CRT and those things were fricken huge and heavy.
Before I change to these two BENQ 24 inch monitors I ha a Samsung 21 inch CRT monitor and it weighed like an anvil. It came up the stair once and years later it went down the stairs once. Interestingly enough, I can run smaller fonts and see them more clearly on the LCD than on the old 21 inch monitor and that was when it was at its best. On my two old PIVs I have a matched pair of 19 inch CRTs but I use them so rarely that its not worth changing them. They look better on VNC than they do for real. :P
i am thinking of inventing an adjustable hanger to suspend my TV from the ceiling
that way, i can place it as close to my face as possible when i sit back in my chair :P
i may even add a vew motors and bells and whistles
when i move my head around, the TV tracks my movement :U
i have to sit up straight to see the monitor
what i like to do is sit back in the chair and write code - or whatever
can't do that at the moment
New very thin light monitors are in the works. They should be out in a few years.
It's a new tech called OLED or AMOLED(Organic Light Omitting Diode).
Weight of a 24" monitor will be ounces. Actually the frame will weight more than the
screen. No back light problems and a fast and a superb picture.
For more info go to the following "www.hardforum.com". Scroll down to displays
and there is tons of stuff about displays. Or do a search there on OLED.
I'm like you. I want the monitor in a frame that I can move anywhere when
I sit back in my chair.
that sounds great, Jack
eh - i think i'll just close my eyes and write code
couldn't get too much worse, right ? :P

I suspect someone already has that. You could always just use a helmet, or mount the monitor to your chair.

I have a good friend that has his PC set up in his living room attached to his big 52 inch wide screen Sony TV and he sits there and does all his surfing. When I have to visit him to do something on his machine I get a sore neck because you have to move your head around so much to view things. :bg
i like the easy chair
all it needs is a flush handle on one side and an icebox on the other - lol
yah - a big TV is a bit much
i know some gamers have that - and, like, a bose sound system - "surround-porn" :lol
that is over-doing things, if you ask me
As monitors get bigger I will use them. DVD resolution is borderline on HDMI but it still looks OK most of the time but I will happily go to a 6 foot screen hung on the wall if they ever become available. At the moment I use a 24 inch screen viewed from about 40 inches which works fine.
DAVE !!!
Try this:
Instruct Zara to stand in the middle of the room,...naked,...
...If she still looks fabulous,...I'd say,...Life is good,...no problem,...
Otherwise,...send over to my house,...I'm almost blind,...but, I can sense babes in infrared,...
I'll get back to you with the results of my thought experiment,... :eek
...On a more serious note: is assembly programming making us all blind ???
Notice to all... To help Dave see, we should use larger fonts :-)
thanks, Rob
but i can set the fonts i see on the browser :bg
What with all the news going around these days, perhaps not being able to read the text is a GOOD thing. News is mostly war, death, and worst of all gossip about spoiled stars,or worse still about people famous for being famous... :boohoo:
i saw that post, baltoro - lol
that job is already taken
and she doesn't like it when others try to take over
ever been bitched out in Brummy ?
i'll give you some pointers
1) don't try to speak - or understand - just wait for the pauses
these are indicators that you are to respond
2) if the intonation rises at the end of the sentance, shake your head "no"
3) if the intonation lowers at the end of the sentance, nod your head "yes"
4) it doesn't always work
DAVE !!!
This is such a relief,...
I'm so glad that I'm not married to one of the top ten most gorgeous women on the planet,...
I noticed this in today's paper,...they obviously wrote it with DAVE in mind,...
