Those of us who grew up with such things have great sympathy for those who missed out on one of the great taste sensations of the world. The trouble is unless you grew up with it you are not robust enough to eat it.
Now over the years wimps have tried it in cooking which works OK for the faint of heart, the more robust eat it on toast but real men[tm] eat it out of the jar. In my early youth I had a special version, old fashioned bread that you cut yourself in slices, spread with some of my mum's dripping left over from cooking meat, a very generous layer of Vegemite and top it off generously with a salt shaker. It was strong enough to bite you back when you bit into it. :P
Whenever I hear the song Down Under by Men at Work I often wondered what the heck is a Vegemite Sandwich? Now I know!
As to favorite spreads mine has to be Bacon Jam. Take a big bunch of really good bacon and render it down then add a bunch of your own favorite spices, onions, etc to taste, let it simmer for about 4 hours give it a quick puree let it chill and bingo, Bacon Jam! :bg
my brother brought some home, it tasted like shit
Bill,
I would have a go at that, it sounds great. Shame i am such a lousy cook. :P
