Title: Looking for another pdf reader
Post by: shankle on August 06, 2010, 11:11:15 PM
I don't want adobe on my puter.
So I installed Foxit reader. That WAS all fine and good up to the latest update.
They are pulling the same stunts that WD did. My Virus checker reported an ebay.url.
This was put on by Foxit reader. If you go to wilders and look in "software and services"
you will find an article about Foxit. A few people are not happy with what Foxit is
pulling.
So, what other readers are out there?

Sumatra is pretty good.

1674 Kb, open source, portable, and a single file.

Other PDF readers are 10 - 20 megs.

I have no problems with Sumatra. Of course I have not fully tested it and I do not use Outlook Express.
Wiffie is still using Outlook Express :( Head like a hunk of cement.
I deleted Foxit reader on her puter and installed Sumatra.
I got the same old phrase "What did you do to my Puter!!!!!!!!".
Sumatra won't read/convert pdf files in Outlook Express as far as I can tell.
So I put Foxit reader back on and things are working again.
I used the .zip file and not the .exe file for download.
Thinfs are never easy :lol

Jack - maybe, if you look around a bit, you can find another program for conversions
of course, there is always the "roll your own" option   :bg

I use PDF-XChange (http://www.tracker-software.com/) for PDF viewing, and doPDF (http://www.dopdf.com/) for PDF exporting.

Works pretty good for me

For what it's worth my experiences with SumatraPDF.
On Wiffies puter I reinstalled Foxit Reader with the .zip download and it's working for her.

Running Thunderbird and K-Meleon.
On my puter seems I had more than one copy so I decided to delete them all to start over.
That's when the fun started. Two hours later I finally got rid of the darned thing and I am
afraid to reinstall it. It had one file mixed in with Sandbox that normal procedures wouldn't
let me delete it. Safe Mode, User control, I am the administrator, and finally DOS cmd line did it.

Seems each Free PDF reader has it's quirks. I just don't have to time to play with them all.
It would be nice if a simple small pdf reader had normal uninstall options and worked on
XP and Vista.
