My ISP is ATT. They have created a monster by combining with Yahoo.
I pay for the ISP and expect good service from a company as large as ATT.
Their web site is CHOKED with advertising, So much so it is hard to find what you need.
The latest wrinkle is my Email. It seems that they have had trouble with Spam Guard
for quite awhile. My wife and I have had important email winding up in ATTs email
spam folder (which I don't use). I use Thunderbird. We were totally unaware of the this.
They clear their Spam folder monthly. Gods knows how much email we have lost.
I spent hours yesterday trying on ATTs web site trying to turn off Spam Guard.
No Luck.
It would be such a pain to switch to another ISP. Besides another ISP might have the
same Spam Guard. I am at a loss for what to do about this.
wow - i had a similar thing i never knew about, Jack - i have cox service
the default setting is "delete mail perceived as junk" - not a very smart default, if you ask me
maybe they know it is spam, though - we will see
also, there are a few other features i didn't know about
for one, i can block a sender - that will be nice - lol
i broke up with a gal named Kathleen about 15 years ago
her mother still sends me mail, as though we are getting back together or something - lol
goodbye Patsy !!!
Hi Dave,
I think my wife and I have successfully turned off the Spam Guard.
I don't have the option of going to another ISP here as ATT evidently
has a monoply at this time. Yuk.
I had to install Firefox to get to the screen that would let me turn off
Spam Guard. Now I have 2 internet browsers - K-Meleon and Firefox.
Nothing like duplication to hog up your puter. K-Meleon is very nice
and I don't want to part with it.
Time will tell if I have been successful......
It must be nice to be popular with the ladies :bg
it's more of a curse, really - lol
well - an e-mail client can't really give you control over some ISP account settings
( i suppose if it was an ISP-specific customized version of the app, it might )
i went to the cox webmail site and logged in to change the settings
try this link, Jack
ATT WebMail Southeast (https://webauth.att.net/auth/webmail/login?action=Login&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwebmail.att.net%2Fwmc%2Fen-US%2Fv%2Fwmgoto%2F4BE18295000D89AC000032292221880186)
it says something like "if you have upgraded to ATT-Yahoo mail - sign in at some other URL"
ignore that message and sign directly into their webmail
from there, you should be able to access your ATT account settings
which may include a way to get rid of the yahoo thing - lol
Separate your email from your ISP, that way you are not tied to a particular service or location. I've used Google's Gmail for quite some time. It also supports POP and IMAP connections.
If you're worried about security/privacy, you probably shouldn't be sending unencrypted email across the internet.
Hi Clive.
Correct me if I am wrong. Doesn't Gmail also use Spam Guard?
I'm not very fond of the Yahoo/Googles out there and if they
are using Spam Guard then how would I be any better off than
with ATT?
One would think the reverse is true.
Well they do have spam filtering, not sure if it is any specific vendor of Spam Guard(tm). I believe it is their own, using their own heuristics and millions of eyes to spot spam emails (source/format/etc). I have found it to be very effective, and only rarely had to dig into the spam mail box to find a message. The messages it has marked were emails sent by robots.
Most any email server you use is going to present some filtering and rejection to inbound mail, before it even accepts the mail. The level of spam and junk hitting mail servers is just insane. In many cases it is impossible to send EXE/ZIP attachments, even renamed.
My in-laws and extended family all have AT&T DSL, so I understand your frustration with the whole ATT/Yahoo mess.
