Title: View System Volume Info files by a limited user
Post by: Magnum on April 17, 2010, 02:08:51 AM
I have granted full control to a limited user to view the files in C:\system volume information,
but I still cannot view the files.

Is there a way to view them?

Thanks.

right-click on the System Volume Information folder - then Properties
Sharing tab
Network sharing and security - check the "Share this folder on the network" box
assign a Share name
I usually use "System Volume Info" - it cannot be the same name and you will want to change it back when you are done

I tried it, but I am still getting the denied access message.

i don't know if it will work, but you might be able to "take ownership of the folder"
google around for directions - they probably vary with the OS

I tried that too.

I have done all kind of searches and the XP newsgroup says it can't be done.
Just makes me want to try harder.  :toothy

Guess I will have to live with it.

On XP Pro I don't have to share anything. A limited user can access the System Volume Information for any drive simply by un-checking the Hide protected operating system files option on the View tab in the Folder Options dialog, accessible from the Tools menu in Explorer.

On XP Home, if you start in safe mode the permissions tab will show up in properties. All you do is add your user/group to allow access.
From memory, only LocalService or NetworkService has access to it (not even the administrator group).

When I tried to share it (xp home) I got 'access denied' trying to create the share.

sometimes, you get the "Access Denied" message, but can still open the folder
usually, I have not gotten that message, but I did the other day
I will still able to open the folder, though
that was on a freshly formatted drive
