Title: Commercial Code Signing, another scam.
Post by: hutch-- on November 05, 2009, 01:54:56 AM
I just looked up the price of buying the digital certificates from VeriSign and a one year version will only cost you$499 AU, 2 years for $899 AU. Do you get the feeling that the little guys have been priced out of the software market by yet another scam to extract even more money by financial leverage ?

I know this is a dumb question, but what is a digital certificate and why is one needed?

as far as i am concerned, it isn't
it does little good, as hackers have valid certificates, now and then
i have more software that does not have certificates than software that does - lol
from what i can see, hardware drivers always seem to have them
if it doesn't, i guess it would come up and prompt you to see if you want to continue installation
i am going to let the hardware providers worry about that - lol
of course, we always wind up paying for it, either way
Hutch is right - VeriSign wrote some code long ago and more or less sits back and rakes in dough
sounds kind of like insurance (the second biggest scam ever) - lol

Well, I bit the bullet and just got my cert (the vetting process for an individual developer took  a while). I did not go with verisign, prices were a bit high... Went with GlobalSign, 315$ US for 3 years, that was a good deal I think, most of that was from donations people have sent me...
