I don't know if this will be of any value to you guys but the last time I bought a new Puter uninstalling Norton was a nightmare.
I also haven't tried this program because I haven't been given my free copy of Windows 7 yet. I wonder if it will work on
Vista?
Here are the details of where I found it:
Go online to "Wilders Security"
Go down to Software, hardware & general Services
Go to software Services
The article is called "New Computer with pre-installed Windows 7".
Let me know what you think please.
my all-time favourite program is the "Norton Removal Tool"
it is available from norton (symantec)
you have to start by identifying which norton product you have....
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
it does a pretty complete job of cleaning the registry
any other method seems to leave a lot of garbage behind

Jack,
The trick is to install the OS yourself and all you have to turn off is all of the Microsoft stuff. Have the old one running alongside you so you can access info that you may need.
To Dedndave,
Norton was an example from years ago. No machine I get now is ordered with Norton on it.
To Hutch,
I don't have the knowledge to build my own Puter so I get what the manufacture puts on the thing.
But I have become very good at getting rid of things I don't want. Was just considering an easier way.
Thanks
my machine has an OEM recovery partition - holding the F10 key at boot allows you to rebuild the C drive completely
originally, it had norton on it, as well as several other undesirable programs
i took the time to figure out the recovery partition and recreated it so those programs are no longer installed
it was well worth the effort - and wasn't all that difficult, in my case
for some machines (some dell's for example) it is a bit harder to do
but, prior to that, i used the norton removal tool with great success
