Title: Firefox 3.5
Post by: Jimg on October 17, 2009, 07:17:57 PM
I recently discovered there was a new version of Firefox available, version 3.5 (I'm a little slow sometimes.)

If you are still using 3.0, I would suggest an update, they fixed many things that were bugging me before this lastest version.

The 2.x series was getting too bloated in memory. Newer memory management or web-engine or whatever is much smoother.

its definitely an improvment but for me if I open more than 10 tabs it still goes crazy in memory. Also it has a weird bug, if I leave my pc idle where the monitor shuts off, it climbs to 300 megabytes of mem(which is crazy) and uses serious cpu time. anytime you report a bug to mozilla they like to place the blame addons or your intelligence right off the bat, so keep that in mind if your go on their irc or attempt to submit a bug.

Then try it on Firefox's safe mode to see if it still happens. Then they'll shut up   :wink

I did that prior, but even if I didnt the fact they automatically assume the problems essential my fault makes me never want to help them ever. It already pisses me off they make over 200 million on a free product that others spend their valuable time building, and recieve 0 compensations, but to have the attitude i've seen just makes it worse. Google chrome has commericals now, hopefully people drop firefox and maybe they'll get their act together, and stop bragging about download count(which is mostly automatic updates) and start fixing bugs.

Why the heck would I use a browser by Google ? Firefox is the better browser of the two, I don't care if they make money on free software.

How do they make money, really ?

I ended up with the Google browser from installing Google Earth and might I say its a genuine PIG designed for idiotz. Those of us who enjoy the sheer speed of K-MELEON have pity on those who use lesser tools.  :P

WebKit, which powers chrome and safari is actually a brilliant piece of code. Mozillas code base used in firefox is infamous for being bloated, and overly complicated, while webkit is lean, and mean. That said i'm also not a big fan of chrome due to the update google installs and leaves on your system even after uninstalling, plus making it difficult to remove. chromes javascript engine is second to none though, and k-meleon is still too buggy to be used seriously and trusted.

You must be doing strange things with it Cube, I have been running it for years and there is little it does not do well, flash, java normal html, sound, video etc etc .... and its FAST. It uses the bare gecko engie, not half and half with Internet Exploiter.

I keep the Microsoft browser only for the occasional Microsoft site that will not accept anything else but I don't even bother with Firefox any longer. About the only problem I get is self inflicted, on K_MELEON you can set the user agent yourself so mine is set to Exploder 9 which confuses the occasional web site that shows the error message "Bad user agent".

Is there a flash blocker for K_MELEON?

i've had alot of problems with the bookmarking system with k-meleon, last time I tried it. Sometimes it didn't show any saved bookmarks on restart, sometimes it just decided to crash when I added a bookmark, and sometimes it freeze for a good minute or two and then decide to show me *some of the bookmarks. to me bookmarks are very important so that I can revisit interesting things later, so that my big issue with k-meleon, I didn't use it much after dealin with that.

Internet Exploiter<--- for some reason that's really hilarious,  :bg  :U

Can't use K-Melion in PCLinuxOS and I am NEVER going to do e-mail in Windowzzzz again.
Only time I use Internet explorer is to play Bridge and Hearts. NOTHING ELSE. Works fine for me.
In the past I had trouble with K-Melion for some reason(memory) and besides it doesn't work in Linux that I know of.

Cube,

The bookmarks data is just a HTML file stored in the K-MELEON directory tree. I keep the file backed up so that if I do one of their upgrades I can just copy it into place and have all of my old ones available. Makes it easy to keep all of thew same bookmarks on multiple computers as well.

I am running K-meleon(thanks for the tip Hutch) and love it, was running Firefox, but it was becoming a real memory hog. Took a little while to adjust to K-meleon, but I find it much faster, and a delight to browse with.

Also see a post about K-meleon pop-up blocker I just posted, weird bug.

Hi I am a bit late for posting here but I hope it is okay. Anyway there is a newer firefox that has been released a few weeks back and it is faster and has greater graphics than the older. If you would like to try then you could download it via the firefox site.
