I would like to use 7Zip if the files are compatible.
For instance will 7Zip expand a .zip file created by Winzip file?

Yes

No, but you can create a self-extractor, so WinZip is not needed. Look at my signature - the MDG Dashboard is a self-extracting 7z archive.
7z has by far the best compression ratio of all available packages, with the exception of some extremely slow PAQ archivers
