Skinning controls

How does one skin a control so that it has a different style?
For instance, like how some games and programs have totally custom buttons, loading bars, and dialogs.

By the way, nice forum layout selection, hutch.

There are many examples of doing this on the web, the best is at Test Department (Part 30). Get it while it's still there as I think they have pretty much given up on the project.

NaN has also written a tutorial on custom and skinned controls, I can't find it at the moment but will post a link when I find one.
