With thanks to a number of our members for their assistance, here is a small app that I wrote for a friend who live up the street from me. It is designed to perform much the same task as the unix TAIL but it a GUI with a number of more or less useful options. You can set both the tail end read buffer size and the timer interval in milliseconds.

It is designed to first select the file that is going to be tracked and it has 2 buttons on the toolbar for starting and stopping the timer so that it does not have to keep running when its not being watched. On my win2000 box I cannot get it to use much over 1% processor time and the processor usage does not change when I turn the logging off so its probably efficient enough for the task. The only way I could get the processor usage up by a couple of percent was to set the tail end read buffer to a much higher figure than is required to view a log file tail end.

He has deployed it on a number of windows Server 2003 web servers and it seems to be doing the job fine at the moment.
