Simple sound programming

I'd like to know how to add sound to my existing mode 13h game.  I have a simple animation on the screen and I'd like to have some sort of music playing in the background.  I would rather code it all manually than using any libraries or anything like that.  Can anyone recommend a tutorial about this please?
