Firefox Application

I am interested in writing an application that can change certain settings of the Firefox browser quickly ( something that can change network and other settings quickly from a set of predetermined options ). How do applications interface with Firefox ( is there an api of some sort available ) ? Any information would be appreciated! Thanks
