I have heard less than flattering things said about the strength of American beer.  :P

Steve, we make a few pretty good stout malts. My favorite is Samuel Adams Cream Stout but all are expensive. My favorite cheap beer with lots of flavor is Pabst Blue Ribbon sometimes referred to as the best alcoholics brew. :bg

Bill,

These sound like what we call "botique" beer in OZ. Some of these brews end up at 12 - 13% and while you may survive the first one, the second will leave most people on the floor. I have personal friends who own a brew shop and they can produce some of these high powered brews but in my own case, I can no longer drink beer as I get allergy reactions that make me sick so I only drink pure malt scotch these days and only in extreme moderation. Now if I lived in the US I would find a way to get a supply of "White Lightning" as some of these hillbilly distillers had real talent with home made sour mash. Wheat and Corn make powerful alcohol but it has to be aged or treated properly first to get it smooth enough.

When you get over here I know someone who "claims" to have the recipe.

Bunch of 'gayboyz' from the outback again.. geez when will you guys 'stand up' to a real boozer... :green2

Went to the UK on a business course. After work nothing to do so 'pubcrawl' at the residence. Drank 'lager' beers (seemed to be a delicacy there), lots of them.
After 6 hours of this(01:00), everybody's falling over and I'm 'straight'. The Hotel manager looks at me funny  :green2.
OK I say I'm off to Heathrow, gotta pick up the wife at 08:00. Manager's beside himself - Can you drive like that ??
Like what ?? See you on Monday (today's friday).

It's a bit early isn't it. - I'll sleep at the airport.. bye!! .. and off I drive with the whole entourage gawking at me from the pub steps.

The wife and I did a 3 week tour of the UK, and only after did I realise how 'mentally restricted' some countries are.
This may be a result of 'conditioning'/indoctrination as a whole., but as you say..

I encourage my kids with 'open thought' and to never accept the norm..

Van,

The term "botique" applied to the brewers, not the drinkers. less than seasoned drinkers did not last long on 12 - 13% beer, the term was floorboarded, IE flat on their face on the floor. I had a mate from NZ who could drink amazing amounts, I have gone to the pub with him years ago and he could get down 10 Schooners (20 fluid ounce) in a sitting and still walk home. Its starting to catch up with him as he gets older, he gets a bit of gout in his feet and may have to go off the piss for a while to stop it from recurring.

They tend to seriously frown on people driving while pissed here, I am old enough to remember Christmas Eve here before the drink driving laws came in and every idiot and their dog were trying to drive home after their Christmas party. I only ever did it once, drank spirits all night then at about 3am drove home in a V8 Studibaker I owned. Could not feel my hands and feet and has longer than 2 second reflexes. First time I ever drove home at 30 mph.  :P

One does get sensible as you get older  :bg.  I still see 'kid's' doing the drink run. I've explained 'things' to my kids - strangely enough they do not like drink, which is good.
I(we) rarely go out for a 'social' nowdays, and when we do I have fruit juices or cooldrinks - been doing this for as long as I can remember.

Many moons ago I had a work colleague who was hit head-on by 2 guys in a 1 ton pickup, luckily for him his was a 2 ton and he demolished the other car.
The 2 guys apparently had been clubbing the whole night and were drinking a lot (according to the security guy who'd seen them hours before the accident), and on their way home fell asleep behind the wheel and the car drifted over on my coleagues side of the road. The 2 guys in the small pickup died.

I found out later that I knew one of the other 2.
