hutch--

I just ran into an article of the new Chinese J10 jets, not as "sexy" as the Sukhoi 30 or Mig 29 but they are supposed to perform well.

I have been puzzling with lego bricks all my life. I know how to do this. When Peter, at age 6 is competing with me, I find it extremely neccessary to show him that I can puzzle bricks better than him, because he is so damn talented that all that is called rational has gone haywire.

Dunno but I would bet the Spit can out-turn any of the modern fighters.  :bg

yah - that is because of the speed they are traveling - and need to travel to keep aloft   :bg
newer aircraft weigh something like twice as much as the older ones
they probably have much less wing surface area
and - they travel at least 3 times faster
speed has replaced surface area to create lift

it's hard to make the same corner in a corvette going 90 as the one you can make in a VW going 15   :bg

I have doubts that the WW2-era fighters can outturn the recent ones. AFAIK the recent ones are designed and built to take much higher loadings, to the point that the maneuverability limit is what the pilot can stand, not what the aircraft can stand.

Michael

you must remember, the old planes could also pull "heavy" turns, and at lower speeds
as you say, the limiting factor in either plane is the G-force that the pilot can withstand
e.g., the same pilot can pull smaller turns with a slower plane (more correctly, a plane that has a lower stall speed)

MichaelW

I guess it depends on how you define "outturn". By my definition it's not minimum turning radius, it's maximum turn rate.

yah - and the newer planes can shut down briefly and make small turns
although, they tend to fly like a rock without thrust - lol

That Spit would be a lot of fun, it looks like one of the late Gryphon engined versions, 2200 HP. As usual its the ordinace that makes the difference, fit the Spit with state of the art surface to surface missiles and it would probably still be useful. Very late Spitfires clocked up just under 500 mph with a Gryphon engine tweaked to about 2400 HP. 2 stage supercharger with a cooling stage between from memory. If you have ever heard a Merlin of Gryphon, PHARK they are loud.  :bg

i bet you can also watch the gas gauge move   :P
i've had a few cadillacs over the years - the older ones were like that

i live not too far from Falcon Field here in Mesa - home of the Champlin Fighter Aircraft Museum and the Confederate Air Force Museum
they fly old-timers in and out of there a lot
the spitfires are loud - so are the mustangs
the one that flies over the house most often is an old B-17 named "Sentimental Journey"
you can almost see the gas station it is dragging behind it - lol

Higher speed means higher G for the same turn rate, even worse for radius
The Jet pilot will have a big problem competing with a slower aircraft  :8)

You can actually buy real jet models of it:
