Since Dantz (V-Communications - Retrospect Express) could care less if they support my DVD
drive I am left with NO backup.
So tried the Windows XP backup. It was fast and simple to use. Haven't had to restore as yet
but if the restore is anything like the backup then it probably is a good product. It will also do
incremental backups.

I would like to hear other comments on the Windows XP backup.

I just use FolderClone to sync all my drives to a big USB2.0 drive, daily at 6am. :) Takes about 5 minutes per day.

More data on Acronis Please>

I have a Phillips DVD+- RW DVD 8631 from Dell.
The Phillips drive came with software by Sonic.
I wrote and asked Acronis if they supported this drive and they answered:

Acronis writes to some packet and this packet has to be written to the
DVD through Roxio DirectCD or Ahead INCD.  Roxio is $70. Ahead can
be downloaded for free but I am afraid of it.

Would someone be so kind as to shed some light of this.

shankle,

The Sonic software should come with a utility called DLA, which is the equivalent of DirectCD & InCD.  They all "format" the CD/DVD so that it can used as a giant floppy disk.  They all use UDF packet writing protocols, and should be able to "see" each others disks.  This may only be true is the disk is temporarily "closed" after writing, to make them readable by other drives.  Because of this, I've had better luck with RW disks, which are closed automatically when writing is completed.  With only R disks, space is used/lost ever time the disk is closed, and then reopened, and may have to be closed manually.

With CD/DVD diskdrives included with HP/Compaq systems, I have needed to download the DLA software from their website; it was not included with the retail system.

I used Acronis on a Dell server, running 2k with a Plextor USB writer.
I also used it on a Dell workstation, running XP, with an Asus internal writer.

On both it worked great, so i don't suppose there will be issues in your case.
Obviously, they won't guarantee you in writing that it works on a certain configuration, but it's highly probable that it will work indeed with no problems at all.
