I got another computer hooked up to my main one.

I used a Ethernet switch.

Can I transfer files between computers quickly ?

you have to turn on file sharing
then - look in "Network Places"
you'll have to designate sharing folders, and move the files there to share
or - you can always set up an FTP
there are several other ways, as well

If you are only connecting 2 computers directly to each other, you can use a CAT5 crossover cable.  I got lazy and just cut an old CAT5 in half, crossed the send and transmit with each other.. and voila a crossover cable :-)

Now, if one computer is running Win 7 and the other is not, then you have to make sure the Win7 computer IS NOT in a "home network" or the other computer won't see it....

What color wires are the send and transmit ?

Oh I don't remember, but in certain cases you have to cross all the wires.. 4 with 7 and 5 with 8
This should help...

Thanks.

I got a headache looking at the diagram.  :tdown

I think one of the cables I found was a Cat 6.

Looking for a sword. :-)

P.S.

When I get this figured out, I will post pics of my modifications to my mother's computer.

It should prove to provide a few laughs.
