faster ethernet

From my limited knowledge of this subject, I am hearing this is for now for business and schools. It is a better faster switch in the main Bellsouth office as I hear it. So am I correct in assuming that this has nothing to do with fiber
optics? Since Bellsouth has been gobbled up by ATT, where do they fit in this picture?
You engineers out there please enlighten me.
