Network cable unplugged

I am getting "Network cable unplugged" on a HP Pavillion.
I did not have that problem when it was running WinMe.

I would like to be able to view my connection speed.
If there is another way, that would be fine.

I use dialup on this particular computer which works fine.

Any ideas?
Have a great day,

well - you may be using dial-up, but the LAN adapter is still present
on my machine, i also have a 1394 fire-wire adapter, as well as a modem
i go into the device manager and disable the ones that are not being used
that prevents the "network cable unplugged" message and turns off the tray icons

i think the task manager will tell you connection speed
if not, try the network connections - modem adapter
you can create a shortcut to it if you want and put it on the desktop or wherever

I had this strange problem on my notebook with Windows 7. I couldn't connect through wireless or anything else. It was as though the network on my computer was frozen.

Then I ended up formating and re-installing. ::)

i seem to recall a registry fix for that that applied to vista and win7
don't remember what it was, but you can google around and find it
